The vision of Teachers Like Me is to empower and increase the number of Black teachers by removing barriers and providing support to be effective and responsive to academic and social needs for student success.
As a former teacher, I was able to make an impact by building relationships with families and students. My students were academically challenged and loved. I heard from White and Black parents how happy they were to have a Black teacher for their child. I realized I heard this because of the low number of Black teachers in the field. This program will take on the challenge of increasing these numbers each year, beginning in the Kansas City area.
The mission of Teachers Like Me is to recruit, develop, and retain Black teachers.
Recruitment: Teachers Like Me is focused on two groups of people: college of education graduates from partner universities and high school students to receive a bachelor's degree in education. Incentives to recruit the teachers include signing bonuses, relocation fees, affordable housing, and scholarships.
Development: Teachers Like Me is focused on developing a strong instructional pedagogy with a culturally responsive lens. Teachers will be provided additional professional develop by Teachers Like Me to improve instructional practices.
Retention: Teachers remaining in their school and/or district will receive a retention bonus each year.
